NRE or NRO: two folios, not one
Sign-up asks where you live and offers the two non-resident folios as themselves. They are two different accounts a non-resident may hold, registered under two different BSE tax codes, and only one of them is repatriable, so GrowIQ does not fold them into one “I live abroad” answer and choose for you.
- Non-resident, NRE account. Money invested from abroad. Proceeds can be repatriated out of India.
- Non-resident, NRO account. For income earned in India — rent, dividends, a pension. Repatriation is limited.
What sign-up asks you for
- The address you live at abroad: street, city, state or province and postcode. Your Indian address stays on the folio as well; the one abroad is the one BSE holds as where you are.
- The country you live in, which cannot be India for an NRE or NRO folio. If you have moved back, the folio is a resident one.
- The tax identifier of the other country you are tax resident in. India is already declared from your PAN. This declaration goes to BSE in your name, so one saying you pay tax only in India would not be true.
The bank account the folio settles into
A non-resident folio settles into a bank account of its own type, and the form offers only those:
- NRE folio: an NRE bank account
- NRO folio: an NRO bank account
The exchange accepts a non-resident registered as resident without a word, and the mistake is found later, when a bank refuses a repatriation because the record says the investor lives in India. GrowIQ asks first, and refuses an NRE or NRO folio pointed at a resident account before anything is registered.
How BSE registers it
The folio goes to BSE StAR MF under the non-resident tax code for its type: 21 for NRE and 24 for NRO, with 26 for a non-resident minor. A non-resident registered as resident would be filed under a tax treatment that is not theirs, so the code comes from your answer, never from a default.
Tax withheld at source
An NRI mutual fund tax calculator shows the gap between what is withheld and what is owed. Section 195 makes the fund house deduct tax before paying you, without applying the ₹1.25 lakh exemption or knowing your slab. The excess comes back only by filing an Indian return.
